Lonely Planet – Nepal 6th Edition, August 2003
Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge,
which operates under the umbrella of Tiger Mountain, runs three different
operations in the park. The organisation enjoys a deservedly high reputation,
particularly for its excellent guides as well as its environmentally conscious
approach. Tiger Tops does not expand or compromise the safari experience with
unnecessary technological and consumerist trappings.
Most guest come on four day,
three night packages that combine activities with accommodation in both the
Jungle Lodge and Tented Camp. Accommodation is comfortable and the food good,
however, those expecting to be pandered to with extravagant five-star luxury
could be disappointed.
Jungle Lodge (closed early
June-early September) is well known and is the original tree-top hotel. The
buildings are on stilts and are constructed from local materials. The recently
refurbished rooms are comfortable, with solar-powered lights and fans and
solar-heated water.
Tented Camp (closed early
May - early September) is 3km east of Jungle Lodge in the beautiful Surung
Valley. There are 12 safari tents with twin beds and modern toilet and shower
amenities.
Tiger Mountain Tharu Safari
Lodge (now Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge) – open year round is the newest addition.
Built in traditional Tharu style, the long houses are made from timber, grass
reeds and mud, and are decorated with wall paintings. The rooms are attractive
and comfortable; each has a single and queen-sized bed, and a bathroom. There’s
also a swimming pool. The lodge is actually just outside the park on the
northern bank of the Narayani River.

The famous Tiger Tops Jungle
Lodge and its satellite Tented Camp is the oldest tourist lodge in the area,
established in 1965 – predating the existence of the national park. It is
renowned as one of the world’s finest wildlife establishments and also as the
host of the annual World Elephant Polo Championships. The adjacent Tiger Tops
Tharu Safari (now Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge) offers such stylish facilities as
a swimming pool and riding stables in addition to wildlife activities.
