Introduction
Time flies by! Already over a year has passed since moving to Kathmandu (albeit on a part time basis). As a city, alas, it has lost some if its charm in the frenetic struggle to become yet another bustling Asian metropolis. However, there are still wonderful moments – for example on strike days (all too frequent, one might say!) when the calm and relaxed approach of “old Kathmandu” re-surfaces...Read more

Responsible Tourism
At last, only 3 years late, our water meters have arrived and been installed! This is a key component of our management system for a responsible tourism audit. We will now be able to define water consumption at the lodge and the laundry. Similarly, an electricity meter records power from our generators. We are able to measure our energy consumption accurately. The litter management project in the village (initiated by the Sustainable Action Group at the lodge) has failed. We believe the failure is largely one of management approach – by targeting the older members of the village...

Roads in Nepal
Gradually roads are creeping into the more remote hills and valleys of Nepal. The ‘creep’ tends to happen from November to May, then the monsoon comes...two steps forward one step back! All trekkers need to be aware of the increasing road network. Sometimes this can be a help in getting from A to B, or traveling to  start, or get back from, a trek. The highest profile road is that leading up the beautiful Kali Gandaki river valley.Starting from Pokhara and heading west to Kusma, it joins the river valley, then north past Baglung and Beni to Tatopani (hot springs)...

Bio-Briquette: Alternative Energy Source
Most villagers use firewood to cook their food and this is generally collected illegally from the Park. To discourage deforestation and to raise awareness of environment conservation, The Lodge is encouraging a Tharu women’s group to produce bio-briquette as an alternative energy source. Briquettes are made from any waste products generated in the home, schools, farmland, hotels, etc. They shred, soak, press and dry the waste organic material, and the finished product is a thick, disk–shaped briquette that burns in a variety of stoves including local mud stoves...

News from Chitwan National Park
Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge has a busy season ahead with bookings taking a healthy turn after the closure of all lodges within the national park last year. The annual World Elephant Polo Championships will take place in Chitwan from 28th November to 4th December 2010. Last year the tournament was moved to Karnali Lodge in Bardia, which hosted the games for the first time in WEPA’s 28-year history. The international coverage that this event generates each year plays an important role in promoting Nepal and Tiger Tops. The championship also raises significant funds for charity...

Global Tiger Workshop – November 2009
A guest once defined Tiger Tops as a “conservation organisation funded by tourism.” This is exactly as we would wish it to be. It is implicit in our guiding concept of responsible conservation tourism...
